LOS ANGELES — Newlyweds and couples moving toward marriage, take note. Love, as it turns out, is not all you need.

Not if your goal is to avoid the No. 1 reason marriages end in divorce: Money problems.

Everyone knows, or should know, this. But love and a reluctance to take a hard look at our own financial habits, often keep us from seeing, much less confronting, potential financial troubles in a relationship.

Failing to do so, however, can lead to serious post-wedding day troubles.

“Mature, responsible conversations about money are a sign of a marriage that’s going to be healthy and wonderful and enduring,” says Brooke Salvini, a certified financial planner based in San Louis Obispo, Calif. “If you can’t talk about money when you are dating, that is a red flag right there.”

They’re the picture of marital bliss today but the Obamas were once headed for divorce — and friends of the future president worried he was suicidal during a low point in his career, controversial new biography “The Amateur” claims.

In 2000, after eight years of marriage, Barack Obama decided — despite Michelle’s objections — to challenge Democratic Congressman Bobby Rush in a primary on Chicago’s South Side. Obama was crushed in a 2-to-1 Rush landslide.

According to the book, the defeat left Obama a wreck. Edward Klein writes, “During the dark days that followed his defeat, he turned to Michelle for comfort. But she was in no mood for sympathy . . . He had refused to listen to her warnings about taking on” formidable Rush. The primary also left them in debt.

But Brand had nothing but affectionate praise for his ex speaking with Ellen DeGeneres on a Thursday appearance on Ellen.

GREENWOOD, Miss. — A well-known Mississippi oncologist accused of orchestrating a plot to kill his ex-wife’s divorce lawyer said he wanted a picture of the slain attorney with a “bullet between his eyes,” according to testimony Wednesday.

The lawyer was never hurt, though, in part because state agents were tipped off to the possible $20,000 murder-for-hire plot and were waiting at the attorney’s office when the hit man showed up. A shootout occurred and when the firing stopped, the alleged assassin, clad in a black ski mask, was dead and his associate was severely wounded. A bullet also grazed an attorney general’s office investigator.

Associate Regional Editor Sherri Lonon recently wrote an article that was probably published in your city titled “Obama Endorses Gay Marriage, Do You?”

This is obviously a hot topic and the number of comments justify this conclusion. In August 2011, I wrote an article titled “Same-Sex Marriage: Where Florida Law Stands” for Patch.com. This election may render my analysis outdated depending on who wins the next election. Obama’s position became clear recently. What was his position when he was running for the Illinois Senate seat?

As I was reading through comments to Sherri Lonon’s article, one stuck out. A New Port Richey commenter stated, “Like MAAAANY areas, how about we get the Govt out of the marriage business??”

I started to think about this question from the perspective of when a marriage is ending. It struck me that the Legislative, Executive, and Judicial branches of government are intimately involved in a divorce more than I had previously reflected on.

Jennie Garth broke down in the most recent episode of her new reality show, as she revealed her true feelings about her split from actor Peter Facinelli.

In an episode that aired Friday, The “Beverly Hills 90210″ star opened up to her therapist on her show, “Jennie Garth: A Little Bit Country.”

“I think when you get married you hope it’s forever and you hope you’re going to grow old together and it really threw me for a loop,” Garth said as she sat in a circle with two other women, wiping her eyes.

“You’re angry that you weren’t enough for that person,” she said, “So I don’t know if I’m angry at myself for not being enough or angry at him for not considering me to be enough.”

The tearful 39-year-old’s father suffered from heart disease and died in March of 2008.

“You know my dad died … and losing my husband, those are the two main staples in my life,” she said.

The couple had been married for 11 years and have three daughters. They called themselves the “Facinelli Five” and were seen as the ideal couple.

Citing irreconcilable differences, 38-year-old Facinelli filed for divorce in March.
